The problems of toponymy are well known among cartographers. They can be
divided on groups:
-
general
problems
-
the
problems of large- and small-scale cartography
-
the
problems of Russian language milieu and
problems of translating and transcription of place names
-
actual
problems.
The external and
internal problems of toponymy in cartography are discussed .
All forms of toponyms on
maps are discussed: both traditional, transcriptional, transliteratural and
transliteral.
The national and
political interests in toponymy on maps are picked out.
All problems are
examined separately by aspects: pragmatical, semantical, synthaxical and
historical.
The connection of
toponym with map legend and map symbol are also examined.
Some ways of problems
resolving are suggested.
